READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY

Junie B. Jones

Picture

During the school year, we will be reading the Junie B., First Grader books. Each time we start a new book I will post it here on our website. You can read the book at home with your child and they may also bring in a copy to follow along in class.

Junie B. First Grader At Last!

Happy reading to everyone reading along at home! Please feel free to send in the book with your first grader so they can read along in class.

Practice At Home

Here you will find ideas for what you can do at home to help your child throughout the school year!

Tying Shoe Laces

Picture
If your first grader  is not already tying their own shoe laces, now is a great time to begin teaching them! Here is a craft idea to help you help your child.
Get a shoe box, cover it with paper and label with the child's name. Then punch holes in the lid of the box to resemble shoe-lace holes in shoes. Give your child the box, crayons, and markers and let them decorate the box to look like a shoe. Then lace the box with a shoe lace. Have your child use this to practice their shoe lace tying skills.

Math

Please practice addition and subtraction facts with your first grader.
Below are the "Problems of the Lesson" that coincide with our Chapter Five Lessons. Please take some time and review these with your first grader.

Computers

The class will be visiting the computer lab once a month. We are working on keyboard/typing skills.  To help your child practice at home, visit:

Sight Words

It is very important that children become familiar with sight words. These are those commonly used words that seem to always pop up when we are reading and writing. There are many ways to help your child learn these words: make flashcards, create games, hunt for words when reading stories together, or look for them on signs when you're driving in the car20 or going for a walk.
The following are some of the words that you can begin to help your child learn:

Star Student

Picture
Each student in the class will have one week to be our star student. That
student will be allowed to share something special with the class each day, such
as a favorite toy, trophy, book, song, and pictures. The student will fill out
an "All About Me" poster to hang up in the classroom. Parents are also welcome
to come in to do an activity with the class. The activity is limited to 20
minutes and must be scheduled in advance. More information regarding "Star
Student" will be sent home.

May may be a shorter month for us in school, but there is no shortage of learning and activities. In Math, the classes have been doing regrouping with addition and subtraction of double digit numbers. Soon, we will begin working on telling time. It is important to keep finding creative ways at home to practice Math Facts.
The students are writing stories on their own. We have been using picture prompts to spark our story ideas. This is another great activity to do at home. Try writing a story as a family and illustrate it.
The Olympics are coming up in early June. We will be picking our events soon. Each child will have at least two events. For the Olympic events, please make sure your child wears the appropriate attire: a blue or gold tshirt, sneakers and no jeans please.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns please contact me.
